Super modernized! Swings, slides, a cool two-arm digging crane, a zip wire, general store window and of course, the obligatory tic tac toe board, Barry's playground will keep you entertained for hours. My only criticism is that the wood chip mulch is too hard and all of the hand holds and sliding poles and other things to cling to with your hands are made out of pure steel and on a hot summer day your child may receive some 2nd degree burning.

If you and your family are visiting Boston and decide to check out the sights along the Freedom Trail, chances are you will arrive at the U.S.S. Constitution (aka "Old Ironsides") in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Also, depending on your children's tolerance for historical tales, they might be needing a serious break. Here's just the place. Just northeast of the Constitution, set in a park, is this playground. It's perfect for young children - in has a sandbox and plenty of tot-friendly playspace. There's also a large, grassy field in which your children can run.

The same firm that had designed Boston's Post Office Square, Halvorsen Company, worked together with David Phillips to create City Square Park. Using input from the community, representative works of art were used to show the area's history.
The crane represents the Three Cranes Tavern that once was located on there. It was a popular socializing spot prior to the American Revolutionary War, and pottery excavated from the site has been referred to as tavernware. Built in 1635, it operated until 1775 when it was destroyed by fire during the battle of Bunker Hill. The cod represents the most important colonial food. Corn stood for the Native Americans, and rope was for the marine history of the Navy Yard. The figure of Justice at the corner of Main Street refers to the birthplace of the Supreme Judicial Court.
In 1868 it included a fountain, and later a simple obelisk was included as a World War II memorial.
Part of the The Boston Harborwalk, a pedestrian path meant to revitalize and improve the enjoyment of Boston waterfront and promote its access to the public.

This small urban park, situated on a steep hillside in Charlestown, MA, is closely surrounded on all sides by private homes. Residents became intensely involved in the redesign process of this important active play area. The park was rebuilt with two levels of play; each separated by a large planter wrapped with a ramp making each area accessible. New retaining walls, fencing, and plantings define the play areas and buffer them from adjacent houses. New paving and play equipment meet current accessibility and safety standards.

Doherty Park on Bunker Hill Street is named for Ensign John Doherty from Charlestown who was a bomber pilot aboard the USS Enterprise (CV-6) during world war II. Ensign Doherty and his radioman/Gunner Willian Evans Hunt were killed during the first counter attack by the US Pacific Fleet after Pearl Harbor. Ensign Doherty was awarded the Purple Heart and the Navy Flying Cross for gallantry. A World War II Destroyer was also named after Ensign Doherty.
The park itself, along with St. Francis De Sales Catholic Church next to it occupy the real Bunkers Hill while the battle monument sits atop the site of the 1775 revolutionary war battle site, the higher Breed's Hill.
