The same firm that had designed Boston's Post Office Square, Halvorsen Company, worked together with David Phillips to create City Square Park. Using input from the community, representative works of art were used to show the area's history.
The crane represents the Three Cranes Tavern that once was located on there. It was a popular socializing spot prior to the American Revolutionary War, and pottery excavated from the site has been referred to as tavernware. Built in 1635, it operated until 1775 when it was destroyed by fire during the battle of Bunker Hill. The cod represents the most important colonial food. Corn stood for the Native Americans, and rope was for the marine history of the Navy Yard. The figure of Justice at the corner of Main Street refers to the birthplace of the Supreme Judicial Court.
In 1868 it included a fountain, and later a simple obelisk was included as a World War II memorial.
Part of the The Boston Harborwalk, a pedestrian path meant to revitalize and improve the enjoyment of Boston waterfront and promote its access to the public.
