Gaslight District
Gas was introduced to Boston in 1822, and at first there was a great deal of prejudice against it. By the 1830's, the Charlestown Gaslight Company, whose office was in Thompson Square, outfitted the streets with gas lighting. Still present in Charlestown are the three-cluster lanterns, which are kept burning all night and have to be cleaned and maintained. The lamps don't give off a strong light, but the effect is charming and warm. This area is truly one of the most inviting in metro Boston. It's very walkable all the way to Thompson Square without too much effort.
